The New England Independent Booksellers Association (NEIBA) is hosting its 44th Fall Conference in Providence, RI on September 18-20. To encourage attendance by as many booksellers as possible, NEIBA is proud to announce each member store will receive an unlimited number of FREE admission passes. From the opening keynote with Bill McKibben to the closing luncheon with John Hodgeman (forthcoming book Vacationland: True Stories from Painful Beaches), NEIBA’s Steve Fischer and Nan Sorensen have put together a show that has something for everyone. Over three days, booksellers will have the chance to hear from outstanding local authors, to attend informative educational sessions Education on Edelweiss +; effective blurb writing; social media; ABACUS on New England-only data; owner/manager only roundtables; the NEIBA Annual Meeting; and to hear from our publisher partners about exciting new titles, and their top holiday picks.
The NEIBA Board and Advisory Council, along with NECBA, have created offerings that pertain to all aspects of a successful independent bookstore: buying and selling adult and children’s books, events, finances, marketing and more. Children’s Author Breakfast with Holly Black, Justina Ireland and Matt de la Peña & Loren Long on Tuesday and Author Breakfast on Wednesday with guests John U. Bacon, The Great Halifax Explosion; Sherri Duskey Rinker & John Rocco, Big Machines; poet Greg Pardlo, Air Traffic and Emily Sweeney, Gangland Boston are great ways to start the days.
Two evening events include the meeting of 26 brilliant authors at the Author Cocktail reception Monday. Tuesday evening is the gala Awards Banquet, a celebration of New England books and authors at the Biltmore Hotel’s Grand Ballroom. This year’s host is WAMC’s Joe Donahue. New England Book Awards will be presented to Jessica Shattuck, for The Women In The Castle, Michael Finkel for The Stranger In The Woods, Melissa Sweet, Some Writer!, and Mackenzi Lee, The Gentleman’s Guide To Vice And Virtue. The recipient of the Saul Gilman Award is Maureen Karb of Como Sales. The Independent Spirit Award will be presented to Water Street Bookstore. And this year the President’s Award is going to John Irving. Yes, John will be there in person to accept his award!
